Classic Recreations and its owner, Jason Engel, are back at work cranking out jaw-dropping interpretations of the Shelby GT500 CR. Early last month, the restoration shop was raided by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. According to Classic Recreations, a former disgruntled employee made false accusations to the OSBI about stolen equipment. Authorities even confiscated multiple vintage Ford Mustangs during the raid, but found no pilfered hardware. Instead, the investigators determined that Engel had not followed proper protocol when replacing rusty sheet metal on the Blue Ovals – specifically where the VIN plate is attached to the vehicle.

The OSBI determined that Classic Recreations couldn’t replace rusty metal around the VIN tag without completely retitling the vehicle – something that should concern anyone with an interest in putting an old car back on the road. Engel said that the OSBI’s findings will only serve to drive up costs for both his shop and his customers as instead of being able to start with a rusty shell, he will now have to start with higher quality donors. We’re guessing the Ford purists out there will be none too happy about that fact, either.

In the meantime, Classic Recreations is carefully inspecting the confiscated cars, detailing them and getting the wild ponies back to their rightful owners. Past that, Engel says that he is working with state legislators to more clearly define what can and cannot be replaced on a vehicle during a restoration. From the sound of things, that’s something that parties on both side of the issue can agree upon. Hit the jump for the full press release.

The definition of insanity is said to be doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Based on that description almost every person that has ever tried to start a new sports car company must be absolutely certifiable, Certainly, some of the people that dealt with Vector creator Gerald Wiegert over the years would probably apply that label. Over the span of 35 years, Wiegert never really gave up his dream of building an American supercar, but over that time period, fewer than three dozen Vectors are said to have been completed. With that sort of scarcity, It’s not often that you’ll find two of them in the same place, but a car dealer in Ohio currently has a pair of M12s for sale, including the very first “production” model.

In the mid-1990s Wiegert lost control of Vector to the same Indonesian company that bought Lamborghini from Chrysler and later sold it to Audi. During that overlap period, Megatech moved the company to the same Green Cove Springs, Florida industrial park that more recently was reputed to be a staging ground for the UN invasion of America. Megatech took the earlier WX-3 design and wrapped it around what was essentially a modified Lamborghini Diablo powertrain rather than the previous Chevrolet small-block V8 derivative. In other words, the stars-and-stripes patriotism of this particular M12′s paint scheme is sadly a bit late for the all-American cheerleading, more ironic than appropriate.

Only 14 M12s were reported to be delivered to customers over a four-year period. After selling Lamborghini to the Germans, the final M12 was refitted with a small-block meant to be offered as the SRV8, but Vector Motors finally imploded before any were sold.

Casino valets give Ferrari F430 to wrong owner, let him drive away

As if we needed another reason to steer clear of valets everywhere, a report from The Herald Sun claims that a casino in Australia has handed over an F430 to someone other than the owner. This week, professional poker player Van Marcus stopped into the Crown Casino with some friends for a little recreation. Adam Ramsey was there at the same time, though when it came time to leave, Ramsey approached the valet stand claiming that he had lost his ticket. The guy points to the drop-head Ferrari F430 in the parking lot and says it’s his. The valet crew asks the gentleman to fill out a form with his personal information, which he does, and hands him the keys to the Prancing Horse.

When Marcus discovers his car is missing, he’s none too happy, and calls the police. It took the law a mere six hours to lay its hands on the car after Ramsey stopped for fuel. Now, typically, we look down on car theft in the biggest way possible. After all, you just don’t mess with another person’s vehicle. But you’ve got to admire the cajones on good Mr. Ramsey. He’s currently pleading guilty to charges of vehicle theft.

Meanwhile, Marcus claims that the car doesn’t even feel like his anymore. There was no damage to the vehicle. Thanks to everyone for the tips!
