We certainly understand the need to scrap older vehicles. Not only is it impractical to preserve every car that’s ever been built, but why would you want to? That said, decisions to destroy old cars, whether under the auspices of a government program like Cash For Clunkers or by profit motive at an automotive recycler, should be made by informed individuals. That way, vehicles that may have potential as collectibles don’t unnecessarily vanish.

That’s why we find this story so frustrating. According to the Tampa Bay Times, one of the foremost “VW graveyards,” Sunray Bugs of Dade City, FL, is headed the way of the Type 4. The giant, 10-acre Volkswagen salvage yard lost its legal battle over zoning with Pasco County, and officials have nearly completed cleanup of the site. Hundreds of cars have been crushed, though the octogenarian owner, “Corky” Yager, may have saved most of what was truly valuable, according to this long thread on TheSamba.com.

While the situation is certainly a complex one that’s caused quite a few VW enthusiasts to take to their keyboards to voice their opinions – the aforementioned thread runs to eight pages – the bottom line is that some potentially useful old cars are no longer with us.

Bonhams wrapped up an impressive motorcycle auction in Las Vegas, and some very pricey metal rolled across the block. While seriously expensive bikes like the 1955 Vincent Black Prince pictured above and a 1915 Harley-Davidson 11-F Twin failed to bring home enough cash to find new owners, the 1953 Vincent Black Shadow to the right brought home well north of its early bid estimates. A new owner laid down a hefty 2,500 for the pleasure of ownership. Likewise, one very sparse-looking 1907 Indian Camelback went for ,860.

We took the time to pick through the auction’s offerings to show off some of the more interesting bikes to roll across the stage in Las Vegas. At this time of year there are no shortages of holiday miracles. Most of them seem to involve animals, the cuter and furrier the better. Just today we read about a baby seal who sought shelter in a New Zealand woman’s house and curled up on the couch. Earlier in the week, it was the four deer who were saved from drowning by boaters in Alaska. Well, here’s a car story in the same vein.

It’s about a Beetle. A red, 1963 Volkswagen convertible to be specific. Earlier in the month, the car was listed on eBay and the seller, Eric, contacted website Bring A Trailer hoping to get a little wider publicity for his strikingly original car. Eric was offering the car with a treasure trove of documentation, including the original registration for its California “black plate.”

So who should happen to see the pictures of the car? None other than the son of the original owner, Jim, who was with his dad when they drove it home from the dealership almost 50 years ago. When he saw the license plate, those six randomly assigned alphanumerics lit up his memory and, well, then he saw his dad’s signature on a photo of the registration…

Let’s cut to the chase: Jim is the proud new owner of the Bug.

But that’s not all. It seems that Jim had saved one of the keys to his dad’s old VW, and sure enough, when he showed up at Eric’s house to look at the car, it unlocked the driver’s door. As if that’s not enough to make you believe in karma, destiny, and Fahrvergnügen, Jim bought the car on his son’s 15th birthday. So dad will teach son to drive in the same car that grandpa taught him in.

Take that, cute and furry.

We’ve grown accustomed to seeing all manner of modified machinery power through the sand in an attempt to get to the top of a hill. We’re even used to seeing vintage German machinery do the deed… that is, if you count sand rails and buggies built using air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle bits and pieces.

What we’re not generally prepared for, however, is a Porsche 911 – considered by many to be the quintessential road-going sports car – joining the motocross bikes, Jeeps and other various four-wheelers at the hill climb. Except for perhaps one place: Dakar. Porsche won the event with a 911 in 1984 and then again in 1986 with the legendary 959.

So, vintage Porsche 911s are clearly up to snuff when it comes to traversing the dunes, so long as they are properly modified to do so. We have no idea what modifications the owner of the 911 has performed other than a cool set of driving lights, but we do know that he made it to the top of a pretty gnarly looking hill.

This is what we call making an entrance. Classic & Sports Car Magazine contributor Alain de Cadenet recently took to the Mille Miglia North America in one very beautiful 1957 Ferrari 250 GT. The car literally swept the event’s presenters off their feet at the ceremonial start when de Cadenet came across the line just a little too quickly. The inertia of the stopping Ferrari pulled the stage floor along for the ride, effectively yanking the rug out from under the five people on stage. No one was harmed in the little fiasco, but the event makes for a pretty hilarious clip.
