We now know what Ford is planning for the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The manufacturer has released a slew of photos and information on its new Evos Concept – a design study that will likely influence the look of the company’s products in the near future. While we aren’t likely to see many four-door gullwing hatchbacks in the Ford product line any time soon, chances are that the automaker’s artists will roll in elements like smaller, more discreet headlamps, more vertical hexoganal grille and a sleek silhouette. According to Ford design guru J Mays, the new look is penned, “not to provoke, but to seduce.”

The look is likely to command Ford design for the next five years or so, and you won’t hear any complaints from us on that front. Inside, the Evos also hints toward what’s coming down the pike in terms of interior design as well. With a driver-oriented instrument panel and an inverted ‘L’ climate system, Mays says that future Ford models will boast a more cockpit-like feel.

Befitting a true concept car, Ford says that the Evos is powered by the same plug-in hybrid drivetrain found in the C-Max Energi. That means that a set of lithium-ion batteries store and release electricity to allow the vehicle to operate primarily as an electric vehicle. Hit the jump for the press release.

Jay Leno always gets to take his turn behind the wheels of lots of big, fast, beautiful things that make the enthusiast get all choked up with high-horsepower emotion and exhaust gasses. But he can also check out things that are just weird and beautiful without actually driving – and in these two cases, those things are American.

There are two videos after the jump from last week’s Pebble Beach festivities in Monterey, California – one of the 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept designed by Karim Eddie but named for powerhouse designer Virgil Exner. Long, red and asymmetrical and powered by a Valiant engine, there’s only one, which is only right.

The other vid is of Edsel Ford’s 1934 Model 40 Special Speedster. Certainly one of the most compelling cars of the entire weekend, Jay takes his time with Edsel Ford’s grandson and Pebble concours judge Ken Gross to dive into the speedster’s creation and restoration. What separates an old car from a classic? In many cases, not a lot. Beautiful sheet metal, a legendary powertrain or world-class performance could make a world of difference, and so can attention to detail.

We’re suckers for a well-stamped curve, an intricate chrome grille or even an elegant hood ornament. And then there are the engines. You won’t find many plastic covers in these beautiful bays, but you will find plenty of interesting details and, in some cases, a boat-load of chrome.
