The Pebble Beach Concours might be the most prominent event during the Monterey Car Week, but the hottest ticket in town is to the Quail Motorsports Gathering. Set on the picturesque lawn of the Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley, the event follows the mantra of “less is more” – fewer people and fewer cars, all in the name of exclusivity. The result is that you don’t have to rub elbows with fellow spectators to look at the cars, every one of which is spectacular.

As with many other events this week, Jaguar played a large part of the Quail. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the E-Type, some incredible examples were on display, and even a few of the race cars from Laguna Seca took a trip down to Carmel Valley to make an appearance at the show.

Legendary American race car driver Phil Hill was also honored with 2011 marking the 50th anniversary of his Formula 1 championship. On display were a Ferrari TR/59 that he drove at Riverside in 1959, as well as the 1950 Jaguar XK120 that he piloted to victory in the very first Pebble Beach Road Race.

Additional highlights included a a class dedicated to the Ferrari Superamerica and a Bugatti Veyron gathering.

You expect to find all sorts of optional equipment on a Rolls-Royce. It could be pearl-inlayed veneers or a special paint job. But this example is something else entirely.

Crafted for Sahib Bahadur – also known as Umed Singh II, Maharaja of Kotah – this 1925 Rolls-Royce New Phantom was coachbuilt by Barker & Company of London and includes some rather unusual accessories. Namely, a mounted shotgun, rifle stand, Lantaka cannon, a pair of search lights and a machine gun fitted to a matching trailer.

The car was custom built for the Maharaja for the purpose of tiger hunting, and though requested by the Indian Consulate for donation to a museum, is now going up for auction at the hands of Bonhams at the Quail Lodge mid-August, where it’s expected to fetch between 0,000 and milllion.

Steve McQueen is revered by gearheads as an enthusiastic owner and driver of all sorts of cars, from a brown ’63 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso to a teal ’58 GMC pickup and everything in between. But the King of Cool was equally into motorcycles, and rode them regularly.

Arguably one of the most recognizable was his Husqvarna 400 dirt bike. It was on this Swedish gem that he was photographed for the cover of Sports Illustrated (pictured at right). The bike was sold in 1984 and subsequently changed hands a couple of times, but has throughout remained in the condition in which McQueen last rode it – right down to the spare spark plug he taped to the frame.

Now the ’71 Husky is crossing the auction block once again as part of Bonhams‘ enormous motorcycle and memorabilia auction at the Quail Lodge in Carmel, California, on May 14. Alongside it will be an endless array of McQueen artifacts, including his race trophies won on both two wheels and four. Joining the McQueen items are such notable consignments as a pair of custom Harleys built for Otis Chandler and owned by the Guggenheim Foundation, as well as a pair of classic Norton racers. Monterey’s classic car week means a long days of big events, with Concorso Italiano and The Quail anchoring our Friday schedule. We’ve brought you a sampling of those shows already, but the parade of race cars from Laguna Seca over to the Quail cries out for a little video. The cars come in, the owners take a little break, and then the whole parade heads back to the track. The cars selected for the side trip are usually chosen to match the theme of the year’s Quail gathering.

This year, organizers went with a group of cars that were being featured at the track as well. Bugatti had a particularly large turnout at this year’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, bolstered in part by the presence of the new Veyron Super Sport, which made its first track appearance in the U.S. About three dozen Bugs were entered in class 4A, and most made the trek over to Quail Lodge. As the video demonstrates, they sounded fantastic. Take a look and listen after the jump.
