There were a lot of things to love about the 4C Concept when Alfa Romeo unveiled it – now half a year ago – at the Geneva Motor Show. And one of them was its finish: Decked out in matte red, it was both flashy and understated at the same time.

A tough act to follow, then, so we were a little apprehensive when Alfa announced that it would bring the pint-sized sportscar to its Frankfurt Motor Show stand, albeit in a different finish. But as we found on the show floor, the Milanese automaker didn’t pull out the vinyl or spray it with just any color out of the Pantone swatch book.

Instead Alfa has given it a “fluid metal” finish (similar to the Alubeam finish on the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG) that looks like what ordinary metalwork dreams about when its on vacation – neither polished nor brushed, neither chromed nor varnished. Just bare metal, only nicer. See what we mean in the gallery of live images from the show floor.

There were plenty of curiosities to see art the Frankfurt Motor Show this year. City cars converted into beach buggies. Electric supercars. Exotics with trick folding roofs. Even a tuner Porsche crossover posing as a new vehicle. But few were as intriguing as what we found in one of the back halls of the Frankfurt Messe.

What you see here is a pile of scrap metal transformed by artistic vision into a full-scale replica of the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing.” It’s made entirely of reclaimed car parts and random pieces of scrap by German firm Giganten Aus Stahl, which roughly translates as Giants of Steel. It’s just one of a number of creations the studio offers to those with enough, um, “scrap” to buy the unique creations.

Other projects have varied to include full-scale replicas of famous movie characters – from Peter Fonda in full Easy Rider glory to Aliens and Predators – as well as animals, athletes, even pieces of furniture. Of course we were most interested in the cars, and in addition to the Gullwing we found similar replicas of a classic Porsche Spyder and pre-war Auto Union grand prix racer.

You can check ‘em out in our trio of high-resolution image galleries, but if you like what you see, don’t expect them to come cheap: the Gullwing fetches a princely €69,000 (k), while the Porsche and Auto Union are available for €39,000 (k) and €54,000 (k), respectively. When Alfa Romeo pulled back the veil on its 4C Concept at the Geneva Motor Show this past March, we were as taken in by its unique matte red finish as we were by the rest of the package. In a few weeks, Alfa will showcase the 4C once again in Frankfurt, and its new paint job – among other things – is sure to impress.

As you can see from the quartet of high-res images released so far, the 4C Concept has been given a “fluid metal” finish that looks similar to the highly sought-after Alubeam paint Mercedes-Benz offers on the SLS AMG. It seems to show the Alfa in a completely different light, one we look forward to scoping out in person at the Messe next month.

Alfa also says it has refined the technical package of the concept. Trimming the fat, as it were, to optimize the power to weight ratio, the aluminum and carbon fiber construction is motivated by over 200 horsepower from the 1.75-liter turbo engine that drives the rear wheels through the company’s new dual-clutch transmission that is also making its debut in the Giulietta. The Beastie Boys are back, ladies and gentlemen, and they’ve brought along a suitably awesome video to announce their triumphant return. Danny McBride, Seth Rogan and Elijah Wood star alongside nearly every Hollywood actor of any account, including Steve Buscemi, Will Ferrell, Orlando Bloom and Will Arnett, to name but a handful.

That’s all well and good, but our fanboism has been kicked into overtime thanks to the riotous profundity of amazing metal in the clip.

The video seems to be set in the early ’80s, and as such, there are cameos by everything from an International Scout and a Toyota FJ40 to a killer Datsun pickup. Of course, the king of ’80s metal, the DeLorean DMC-12, also shows up for spell. We’d expect nothing less.

To top it all off, it sounds like the New York trio haven’t lost any of their talent for entertainment since The Mix-Up. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.
