Aston Martin planning two or three Lagonda models

Earlier this year, we reported that Aston Martin had allegedly given its Lagonda crossover concept the green light for production. Now, in speaking to Europe’s CAR magazine, Aston CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez has confirmed that the concept will spawn “two or three” new Lagonda models.

Aston Martin is planning two full-fledged Lagonda crossovers – one that focuses on sport, and one more geared to all-terrain prowess, along the lines of the Audi Allroad, according to CAR. The sporty Lagonda would likely use a low-riding chassis and larger 21-inch wheels, while the more traditional CUV would have more modest suspension and wheel fittings.

The third potential offering? A luxury sedan not unlike the original Lagonda four-door from decades ago. CAR reports that, like Aston’s smaller Cygnet, the Lagonda sedan would combine traditional luxury amenities with “advanced packaging and a sophisticated drivetrain.”

No word on how long it will take Aston Martin to ready its Lagonda sub-brand, but since the company seems to be quite serious about launching this duo (or trio) of vehicles, we could see something crop up within the next few years.

Fiat announces they will indeed be building the Fiat Zagato Coupe Concept we just saw at the Geneva Auto Show, BMW’s new promo of the 6-series has some interesting music, Aston Martin plans on building a new SUV under the Lagonda brand and the Mercedes BLS, a smaller version of the four door coupe CLS may hit showrooms by 2012. Another day, another change in the winds surrounding the Aston Martin Lagonda. After last month’s revelation that the high-riding Aston would remain nothing more than a bad dream for fans of the brand, Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO, recently let it slip that the crossover had been given the green light. The luxury utility is slated to ride on the Mercedes-Benz GL platform, but the company is keeping drivetrain details to itself for the time being.

The Lagonda Concept debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and has since existed under a hail of disparaging comments from journalists and enthusiasts alike. Last month, Aston Martin owner David Richards officially announced that the project would be scrapped. And while there was much rejoicing at the time, it appears the Bez sees dollar signs in the mega-buck crossover market, pedigree be damned.

He may not be far off of his mark, either. Porsche famously stepped into the SUV market with its Cayenne and has been laughing its way to the bank ever since. It wouldn’t surprise us if Bez and the rest of the Aston Martin crew are hoping for a similar performance.

Breaking: Aston Martin prepares to revive the Lagonda.

Update: The Lagonda is being shelved.

Incoming: Aston Martin to turn Lagonda into SUV.

News Now: Lagonda SUV ridiculed by entire industry, tucks tail and runs from auto show circuit.

We’ve seen concepts, heard rumors and waited patiently for hope that a revival of the Aston Martin Lagonda (just not necessarily in the form of an SUV…) would prove to be true. It seems that patience is paying off as new renderings of what may lie around the corner have just surfaced.

According to our Brit-friends at Auto Express, Aston Martin is preparing to unleash a Rapide-based Lagonda sedan with longer proportions and at least 500 horsepower from a 6.0-liter V12 engine. Also possible is the inclusion of start-stop tech and regenerative braking, designed to help the Lagonda reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for any news on this potential range-topping super sedan. For now, head over to Auto Express for a better look at a rendering of a potential Aston Martin Lagonda. If it is indeed headed for production, expect it to arrive on our holiday wish list in 2014.
