Those with the cash are prone to buying Ferraris. Those with lots of cash buy custom coachbuilt Ferraris. It’s a tradition that’s been revived in recent years with such specials as the Superamerica 45, the P540 Superfast Aperta, the Zagato 575 GTZ and of course the P4/5 Pininfarina. But decades ago, the application of custom coachwork to Ferrari chassis was the thing to do, and with Pebble Beach coming up next month, Gooding & Company has announced the consignment of some very unique examples.

Among the fifteen classic Ferraris that Gooding will be putting under the hammer in Monterey will be a Vignale-bodied ’53 Ferrari 375 America, a Touring-bodied 195 Inter from 1950 and a 410 Superamerica (1957), 400 Superamerica Aerodinamica (1963, pictured above) and 250 GT (1955) with coachwork by Pininfarina.

All five were displayed at major auto shows of their day – Turin ’53, Turin ’51, Paris ’57, Geneva ’63 and Geneva ’56, respectively – with prices expected to reach well into seven figures when the gavel drops at the Pebble next month. Picture your dream garage, and we have a sneaking suspicion that a fair few of the vehicles contained therein would be Ferrari supercars. But which ones? An F40? The F50 roadster that followed? Would you skip the Enzo and go right to its track-focused cousins, the FXX and the Maserati MC12? Benny Caiola had all of these and then some, but now his collection’s going up on the auction block.

The enviable stable of the late enthusiast and noted collector included an F40, F50, FXX Evoluzione (the even more advanced version of the Enzo-based customer prototype), an MC12, 333 SP (the last Le Mans Prototype Ferrari ever made), both a 430 Scuderia and an F430 Challenge racer, a 599 GTB Fiorano with the HGTE package and a ’73 Dino, plus a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 and a McLaren Mercedes SLR Roadster thrown in for good measure.

This lustworthy collection is all on the docket for Gooding & Company’s auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, for January 21-22. Most of the New York real estate mogul’s vehicles are estimated in the six-figure range, but several of them – notably the three V12 track monsters – are anticipated to fetch north of the million-dollar mark. Amelia Island is the place to be this coming March for collectors and lovers of classic British sportscars. Last year Gooding & Company auctioned off over million in classic automobiles at the annual event, including a .75 million 1931 Voisin and a .7 million ’61 Porsche RS61 Spyder formerly owned by Sir Stirling Moss.

This year’s consignments have already begun coming in, starting off with a rare 1949 Jaguar XK120. The alloy-bodied roadster – the only one made in Blue Sheen paint – was the first XK120 to come to the United States, and is expected to fetch as much as half a million at auction. Next up is one of only four ’33 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental Sedanca Drop Head Coupes (got all that?) with Gurney Nutting coachwork, likewise estimated around the half-million mark. Finally Gooding has a ’62 Lotus 23B on the docket with considerable racing pedigree projected at around 0k.

The auction will take place on Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation. Details in the press release after the jump, with high-res images in the gallery below.

Gooding will be unearthing some vintage competitors and a barely used road car to its 2011 Scottsdale Auctions next month: a barn find 1964 Shelby Cobra and 1965 Shelby GT350 R, 1964 Porsche 904, 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB, the purported lowest-mileage unrestored Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster anywhere.

Said to be the only unrestored Cobra in blue and red livery, the ’64 snake spent 33 years in “storage” yet comes off as surprisingly lustworthy in spite of that. It began life as Carroll Shelby’s promo car at SoCal racing venues, was dredged up from the deep to do the Postwar Preservation Class at this year’s Pebble Beach, and now expects to find a good home for somewhere north of 5,000. The ’65 Shelby GT350 R is a one-of-26 that was campaigned and did plenty of winning in the B-Production Championship in the sixties.

Another serious racer was the four-cam, fiberglass-bodied ’64 Porsche 904. The one up for auction was used to beat Phil Hill, who was driving a Cobra, at Candlestick Park in 1965. Finally, the ’62 Mercedes 300SL has so few miles that it could qualify for a barn find: 7,367 original miles in 48 years and still in the care of its original owner. We’re coming up on big time auction season again, and Gooding & Co have a few highlighted entries for its 2011 Scottsdale auctions, including two cars being offered for public consumption for the first time. Those would be the 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic (pictured), and a 1948 Tucker with chassis #1010. The Fiat was a Ghia creation, the first of 12 Supersonics produced and kept in the collection of a single owner for the last 55 years. The Tucker has spent 50 years in a barn, which explains why it has but 10,000 miles on the odo.

Three other notables from the gaggle of metal crossing the stage will include a 1930 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton with coachwork by LeBaron – this done before the LeBaron name became irrevocably associated with a very different kind of car – a 1933 Stutz DV-32 Dual Cowl Phaeton, and bringing up the 21st century, a 2005 Saleen S7 from Iron Man.

As far as price goes, the Saleen looks to be the least expensive of the collection with a pre-auction estimate of 0,000. So unless you’re on the angelic list, you might want to put your call into Santa now if you wish to have any hope of carting something home.
