Stephanie Rice was crying when she apologized on television, but was probably crying even more when she had to hand back the keys of her complimentary Jaguar XF. The Australian triple-gold-medalist swimmer was apologizing for ostensibly off-hand remarks made via Twitter following an international rugby competition, remarks that have reportedly cost her a sponsorship deal with the British automaker’s Australian arm.
According to Inside Line, after watching the Australian Wallabies rugby team – a member of which with whom Rice is reportedly romantically involved – defeat the South African Springboks, she reportedly derided the vanquished rivals as “faggots” in a Tweet on the popular social media portal. Rice subsequently apologized for her remarks, but Jaguar Australia evidently felt the association was no longer in their best interests and have terminated her deal as a result.
